Monday, May 23rd, Sheriff Potter caught up with NBC2’s Samantha Serbin to talk about an attempted murder that occurred this weekend in DeSoto County.
On 5/20/2023, DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) deputies responded to the area of SE Maple Drive regarding an altercation and possible traffic crash. Deputies arrived on scene and found two victims which had been badly beaten, one requiring hospitalization.
The Criminal Investigative Division (CID) responded and through the gathering of witness statements and neighborhood security cameras, David Morales-Garcia and his brother Josias Morales were identified as the suspects. This information was broadcast to all DCSO and Arcadia Police Department (APD) officers on duty.
According to witnesses, David and Josias were parked blocking the victim from entering his own driveway. When the victim asked the brothers to move their vehicle, they felt “disrespected” and began to assault the victim to the point of unconsciousness, at which time they then ran over his body with their vehicle before fleeing the scene. A family member of the victim who attempted to intervene was also assaulted.
David Morales-Garcia and Josias Morales were located by APD Officers and both brothers, still wearing their blood-spattered clothing, were charged with Attempted Homicide and Aggravated Battery causing Bodily Harm/Disability by DCSO Detectives.
This type of violence will not be condoned in DeSoto County and Sheriff Potter is grateful for the quick action and teamwork of the deputies, detectives and officers who assisted in putting these criminals behind bars.
