DeSoto County Seeks Public Input As It Considers New Solar Power Center

DeSoto County in Florida gained recognition for being home to the largest solar-power generation plant in the US, the DeSoto Energy Center, which was commissioned by then-President Barack Obama in 2009.

Since then, Florida Power & Light (FPL) has continued to expand its solar-power generation in the county, with the FPL Citrus, FPL Wildflower, FPL Cattle Ranch, and FPL Rodeo solar centers. FPL is now proposing to build the 74.5-Megawatt Hawthorne Creek Solar Energy Center, which could power around 15,000 homes with over 200,000 photovoltaic solar panels. FPL says the plan is to provide “low-cost, reliable electricity free of carbon emissions.”

The public hearing for the proposed Hawthorne Creek Solar Energy Center is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 28th at the DeSoto County Administration Building, 201 E. Oak St., Suite 103, Arcadia.
